Join a team by either accepting a team captain's invitation or sending a request to join your desired team in the IMLeagues system. To send a request, click "Find a Team" and locate your desired team from the list of sports/leagues.
Free Agents
Players who want to play IM Sports but do not have an invite from a captain or enough players to form their own team. IM Sports sets aside a select number of teams each season (in most, but not all sports) specifically for Free Agent players.
NOTE: To get placed directly onto a team, make sure to add yourself to a specific Free Agent team (e.g. FREE AGENTS Comp 1) and not to the generic free agent board for a particular sport. Details below.
Within the same sport and level (e.g. Speed Soccer – Open), you cannot play on multiple teams as both an Invited Player and Free Agent.
The Free Agent program is not intended to accommodate teams that are wait listed or otherwise did not make it into the division of choice. Participants who abuse the Free Agent program will be banned from participation.

3. Sign up for a Free Agent team in IMLeagues
add
To be placed directly onto a FREE AGENT team, click the green "JOIN TEAM" button on our IMLeagues system next to any of the teams with FREE AGENTS in the name (e.g. FREE AGENTS Comp 1). Keep in mind the existing male/female ratio on the roster. IM Sports may transfer you to balance rosters.
You can also list yourself as a Free Agent for any sport by clicking on the "JOIN AS FREE AGENT" button. This does not guarantee you a spot. It is a listing for existing teams looking to add players to their roster.
Free Agent signups are free ($0 transactions) with the purchase of the IM Sports Season Pass ($30)
Eligibility
To participate in Intramural Sports you must have a valid Recreation & Wellbeing Membership and have purchased the IM Sports Season Pass ($30). Recreation & Wellbeing promotional/trial memberships and UC Reciprocity facility memberships are not eligible for IM Sports.
Picture Identification
All players must be prepared to show Officials a valid Cal 1 ID card (students, faculty or staff) or current Recreation & Wellbeing Membership Card in order to participate in IM Sports. Individuals without current membership and picture identification will not be allowed to participate.
A team unable to field a minimum number of players with current IM Sports Season Pass and picture identification will forfeit the contest. Participating teams must ensure all participants have purchased the required membership and IM Sports Season Pass at least 24-48 hours prior to their first game.
League Participation Restrictions
Purchase of an IM Sports Season Pass entitles you to unlimited participation in IM Sports with the following exceptions:
Basketball (5-on-5) – 1 Open and 1 CoRec team
Basketball (3-on-3) – 1 Open team
Dodgeball – 1 Open and 1 CoRec team
Flag Football – 1 Open team
Futsal – 1 Open and 1 CoRec team
Pickleball – 1 Open team
Soccer (11s) – 1 Open team
Softball – 1 Open and 1 CoRec team
Speed Soccer – 1 Open, 1 CoRec team
Tennis – 1 Open team
Ultimate – 1 Open team
Volleyball – 1 Open and 1 CoRec team
Free Agents: Keep these restrictions in mind when requesting access to Free Agent teams.
IM Sports rosters are not intended to be fluid. Once you appear on a roster and play in a game, you may not switch teams. If you are removed from a roster, you lose all eligibility for that sport/season and cannot be added back onto the roster. All rosters lock and are frozen once the regular season ends – no new players may be added to rosters once the regular season ends.
Special Audiences
There are restrictions on participation for current and former intercollegiate athletes, current Sport Club athletes, and other “highly competitive” athletes. Captains who wish to place this type of participant on their roster are advised to contact the Intramural Sports Director before adding this type of player to their roster.
Intercollegiate Athletes
add
Active intercollegiate athletes and red-shirts are not eligible to participate in a sport or related sport in which they intend to compete in at the varsity, junior varsity, or freshman level for at least one academic semester (not including summer semester) after having last been active.
Penalty: Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Related Sports
add
Men’s/Women’s Soccer = IM Speed Soccer and Futsal
Men’s/Women’s Basketball = IM Basketball and 3-on-3 Basketball
Men’s/Women’s Tennis = IM Tennis and Pickleball
Men’s Baseball/Women’s Softball = IM Softball
Men’s Football/Men’s Rugby = IM Flag Football
Women’s Volleyball = IM Volleyball (Sixes)
Criteria Determining Active Intercollegiate Status
add
Member of a varsity, junior varsity, or freshman intercollegiate team
Dressed up for an intercollegiate contest
Participated in an intercollegiate contest
Practiced with an intercollegiate team after the last cut
Red-shirted for an intercollegiate team
If an active intercollegiate athlete or red-shirts season of competition is in the Fall semester, they are not eligible for Intramural Sports participation in their same sport or a related sport (see above) until the following Fall semester. If the season of competition is the Summer semester, they are ineligible for Intramural Sports participation in their same sport until the following Summer semester. Team Managers are advised to seek clarification of this policy when they wish to have an intercollegiate athlete or red-shirt participate on their team.
Penalty: Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Former Intercollegiate Athletes
add
Former intercollegiate athletes and red-shirts who have exhausted all NCAA eligibility are eligible to participate in their same sport in the semester following their final season of NCAA eligibility.
Former intercollegiate athletes and red-shirts from Cal and/or other four-year institutions must participate (in their sport) at the highest level offered (‘A’ or ‘Comp’).
For eligibility purposes, a participant is considered a former intercollegiate athlete or red-shirt for a period of five years if they have met one of the requirements of active intercollegiate status above.
In divisions where multiple levels of competition are offered, former intercollegiate athletes and red-shirts must play at the highest level offered. There exists no maximum number of players of such standing provided they are playing at the highest level offered in a sport with at least two competitive levels. In sports and divisions with only one competitive level, a maximum of two individuals holding former intercollegiate or red-shirt status may participate on any given team in the sport in which they competed in at the intercollegiate level.
Penalty: Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Sport Club Participants
add
Members of Sport Clubs may participate in the sport in which they compete but must participate (in their sport) at the highest level offered (‘Premier’ ‘A’ or ‘Competitive’).
In divisions where multiple competitive levels are offered, Cal Sport Club members must play at the highest level offered. There is no maximum number of players of such standing provided they are playing at the highest level offered in a sport with at least two “competitive levels.” Competitive levels are Premier, A, B, C or Open Competitive. Recreational (REC) leagues are not considered competitive for the purposes of this policy.
In sports and divisions with only one competitive level, a maximum of two individuals holding current Cal Sport Club status may participate on any given team in the sport in which they competed in at the sport club level.
Penalty: Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Professional Athletes
add
Current professional athletes are ineligible to participate in Intramural Sports. Former professional athletes may participate in the academic year following their last season of employment in professional sports.
In divisions where multiple levels of competition are offered, former professional athletes must play at the highest level offered. There exists no maximum number of players of such standing provided they are playing at the highest level offered in a sport with at least two competitive levels.
In sports and divisions with only one competitive level, a maximum of two individuals holding former professional status may participate on any given team in the sport in which they competed in at the professional level.
Penalty: Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Important Note on Highly Competitive Athletes
add
These special eligibility considerations regarding the number of former intercollegiate, current Cal Sport Club, and former professional athletes per team applies to sports with teams consisting of five players or more. Otherwise, the number of eligible players per team with special eligibility status is one (e.g., 3-on-3 Basketball).
Failure to abide by this policy will result in forfeiture of all games in which the illegal intercollegiate, Cal Sport Club, former professional athlete, or professional athlete participated.
Penalty: Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated. Forfeiture of a game precludes a team from entering or advancing through the playoffs.
Note: If the team captain is concerned about any of the above points on intercollegiate, sport club, or professional athletes, please visit the IM office in the RSF 2nd floor.
