Inclusive Recreation

Recreation programs for Recreation & Wellbeing members with disabilities

Inclusive recreation is a welcoming and supportive environment where all students, regardless of disabilities or minority status, can participate in recreational activities together. We invite you to join our inclusive recreation programs, which are designed to ensure that everyone, including those with disabilities and from diverse backgrounds, can enjoy and benefit from shared experiences. Inclusive recreation fosters a sense of community, promotes social interaction, and enhances physical and mental well-being. It is significant for students as it helps break down barriers, encourages respect, and provides equal opportunities for personal growth, friendship and fun. Come be a part of our community where everyone is valued, and diversity is celebrated!

Wheelchair Basketball

Recreation & Wellbeing now offers wheelchair basketball. Wheelchair basketball is a contact sport that bears many similarities to basketball, such as the number of players on each team, the scoring system, the size of the court, the dimensions of the equipment, and the requirement of dribbling. In these program sessions, everyone is welcome to play, regardless of mobility or experience level. Wheelchair basketball is perfect for those who have limited ability to run, jump, and/or pivot.

Ten Per4Max wheelchairs in a variety of sizes will be available to rent anytime during business hours. Please email us at inclusive.rec@berkeley.edu to reserve a sports chair.

All ten chairs will also be out and available during the following open gym times.

No fee required for members.

Student Recreation Opportunity Fund (SROF)

Looking to get active and make the most of your semester? The Student Recreation Opportunity Fund (SROF) offers up to $150 per semester to help students cover fees for a variety of recreational and wellness activities. The funding is limited to one activity or program per student, per semester, and any unused balance cannot be applied to other activities. For example, if $140 is used for pickleball lessons, the remaining $10 cannot be transferred to another activity. This fund can also cover up to three personal training sessions at no cost.

For more details, contact Marvin Floyd II at inclusive.rec@berkeley.edu.

For personal training inquiries, reach out to Robbie Earle at rb_earle@berkeley.edu.

Inclusive Rec Membership

RecWell offers a discounted membership for UC Berkeley faculty, staff, retirees, or alumni with disabilities. For information on applying, contact the Inclusive Recreation Coordinator, Marvin Floyd II, at inclusive.rec@berkeley.edu. We require documentation of disability from your health care provider to verify your eligibility for an Inclusive Rec Membership.

Non-Member Aide Facility Access

Recreation & Wellbeing members with disabilities are welcome to bring a non-member aide to assist with gym equipment and facilities access. When checking in, you must inform the Front Desk staff that a non-member aide accompanies you so they can be given access. Non-member aides are not permitted to use gym equipment or facilities except as required to assist the member. If a non-member aide does want to use the gym equipment, they can speak to the front desk about membership.

If non-member aides are found using equipment, they will be asked to leave.
