Headwaters of the University

There is almost no closer adventure to campus than Strawberry Canyon – literally in Cal’s back yard. Known locally as the Fire Trails, they provide a tranquil getaway from campus, and an excellent uphill workout. The burn will be worth it for the stroll along a babbling creek, and later the Bay vistas. Step off the trail at Metcalf Grove to immerse yourself in a Redwood forest, and you might even find a fairy house. Follow the Grove trail to connect with some of the Claremont Canyon trails, or continue along the Fire Trails to soak up those panoramic views.

Strawberry Creek runs through the canyon, and was once a food source for the native Huchiun-Ohlone people. The history of the creek mirrors the history of Berkeley itself through colonization, development, and urbanization.
